Primary School Hidden Curriculum

The hidden curriculum is when head + heart combine.

Our hidden curriculum is carefully crafted and builds up over time.

It's inside

She’s able to think for herself.
She understands her strengths.
She understands her weaknesses.

She follows Jesus’ example by loving others.
She serves her community.
She strives to make the world better.

She is confident.
She is a Holy Rosary girl.

We’re always working on it

We learn to love our fellow students, our community and God. We find our talents and reach for our best selves while lifting others up.

We build the Hidden Curriculum into everything

You can’t tie it down. It looks different in different settings, like

  • Rolling out the “Think Equal” programme
  • Embedding “Philosophy for Children”
  • Giving girls the opportunity to paint a school in Malamulele

Countless steps that build up over time.

Sometimes we take a misstep, but then we pick ourselves up and carry on climbing.

Love for Others

Teachers connect deeply with the children in their care. Small classes allow us to get to know each child personally. We care for the social and emotional wellbeing of our girls. Through our love and service, our girls learn to love.

We all have so much fun

“I love HRS because I have so many amazing friends. I love my teacher because she is so kind. We all have so much fun at break as we do so many silly things. We laugh all the time.”
COURTNEY
Grade 5

Wellness

Wellness means more than just being happy or in good health. It’s more about making choices that help you to thrive.

We train the girls in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills that will improve wellbeing, including prayer, reflection and gratitude.

No-one gets left behind

We have a team of qualified professionals that work with our teachers and children to support each girl to reach their potential:

  • Educational Psychologist
  • Counselling Psychologist
  • Speech Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Religious Leaders

Spirituality

We’re blessed to be a Catholic school. We welcome and respect people from different faiths and religions.

As our girls grow, they develop moral values. Along with great power and ability, people also need morals. Our Christian character is a key part of how we infuse good morals into woman leaders.

We are supported by the Holy Rosary Sisters and the Catholic Schools Office. Catholic girls are prepared for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion. Holy Mass is open to everyone – whether held in the School Chapel or the Parish Church.

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
Proverbs 22 v 6 (NIV)

Service

Service comes from the heart.

From little, our girls share their talents and show their love for people. They learn to love beyond themselves.

Service opportunities include:

  • Outreach Committee – on a weekly basis, this society meets and helps communities by making sandwiches, visiting people, knitting and collecting clothes
  • Johannesburg Mini Council Representatives – two Grade 6 pupils represent our school and co-ordinate work for outreach projects
  • School projects – every year the school works together to support charities close to their heart
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)

Be kind

“In Grade 1 I learnt to be kind.”
SIPHESIHLE
Grade 1

Become more confident

“Looking back at my younger self, I used to cry about everything, now I am more mature about what comes across my path. Instead of crying about everything, I laugh about it, because life is too short not to enjoy it. I have grown in my sport and have become more confident.”
KEIRA
Grade 7

Happy with my progress

“I see that I have changed in ways I never thought possible. I used to be shy and unconfident , but now I could literally do anything in front of people without getting embarrassed. I have grown to be the girl I am today, and I am happy with my progress.”
MUTSAWASHE
