The Blueprint for Substance: Why a Premium Private School is Your Daughter’s Greatest Advantage

We all know that a private education is widely recognized as the gold standard.

Although we wish that state-subsidized systems were doing better, the systemic challenges facing public schools make many parents feel uneasy.

Private schools cost more. Even in a challenging economy, many families prioritise this because independent education has a reputation for delivering on what public structures often cannot.

1. Beyond the Minimum: The Power of Curriculum Enrichment

Research from University of Cape Town (UCT) found that IEB matriculants tended to achieve stronger first-year results than comparable government educated students, an effect the researcher attributes mainly to the IEB’s different examination style rather than teaching quality.*

The defining difference a premium private school makes, however, is based on the freedom to add curriculum enrichment on top of the minimum government standard.

Some of the extra we provide is found in our association with the Independent Examinations Board (IEB).

The IEB’s exams prioritize:

  • Critical thinking over rote learning
  • Analytical problem-solving applied to real-world scenarios
  • Independent learning and self-discipline to prepare students for higher education

Additionally, they examine in a way that is more aligned with how South African universities educate their students. The UCT study notes that: “… perhaps South Africa should be adopting more of the IEB policies towards teaching and learning on a national scale.”

When applying to an international university, an IEB matric is more easily compared to UK and USA university point systems.

2. Not all private schools are a premium private school

These days, “private school” has become a rather broad umbrella. Parents are realising that “You get private schools, and then you get premium private schools”.

True independent education is not only about a smaller class size; it is about an uncompromising blueprint for excellence.

At Holy Rosary School, our legacy of academic distinction is realized through our IEB Matric results, which positions us as one of the top 10 private girls’ schools in South Africa.

Over the years, our IEB matric results have consistently outperformed IEB averages, and continue to do so – our 2025 Matric group performed 7.1% higher than the national average.

3. The Illusion of Class Size vs. Premium Schooling

It’s so easy for parents to fall into the class size trap.

When discussing private schools, the conversation almost always revolves around class sizes. Whilst lower student-to-teacher ratios are certainly beneficial, small classes alone do not guarantee a premium education.

True premium private schooling cannot be shortcut. It requires substantial, ongoing investment in experienced teachers, diverse sporting and cultural codes, and an environment that nurtures the “whole girl package”.

4. The Unfair Advantage: Pleasant, Happy Teachers who stay with us for years.

A school is only as good as the educators standing at the front of the classroom.

In the current educational climate, there is a shortage of “suitably qualified teachers who also have good teaching experience”.

Our teachers are driven by an intrinsic mastery of their subjects and a desire to mentor the next generation. In a premium independent ecosystem, there is simply no space for weak or indifferent educators; the school must continuously deliver top-tier performance to justify its fees in a weakening economy.

Furthermore, look closely at teacher retention. When educators stay at a school for a long time, it speaks volumes about their professional happiness, fulfilment, and skills. We all know that happy people are nice to work with—and nice, stable, and deeply caring teachers can completely transform a young girl’s relationship with learning.

The dedicated educators at Holy Rosary School provide the soft landings, individual attention and tailored guidance that allow girls to navigate the chaotic milestones of growing up – with confidence.

5. Moving Beyond Prestige: The "Space Between the Marks"

We have found that there is an element of prestige that drives premium private school enrolment. Parents naturally feel a sense of pride in saying, “My daughter is at a premium private school.” True prestige cannot be bought with a uniform or a badge; genuine prestige is found in the substance of the adults the school produces.

Cultivating academic, sporting, or cultural excellence is empty if the girls do not develop a genuine value system, an unshakeable identity, and a love for their community. This is what separates superficial prestige from deep-rooted substance.

At Holy Rosary we like to say: A good education is what happens in the space between the marks. Excellent grades are merely our baseline. The “space between” is where character, ethics, resilience, and sound human values are intentionally formed.

Through our “Hidden Curriculum,” we deliberately develop self-discipline, time management, and emotional intelligence. We don’t produce confident young women because it sounds appealing, it’s because of how we do schooling.
